Chandigarh: The suicide case involving Gagandeep Singh Randhawa has triggered a political upheaval in Punjab. In connection with this case, the police have arrested the accused—former Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar. The police apprehended him at the Mandi in Gobindgarh, located in the Fatehgarh Sahib district. Police officials state that he will be produced before the Amritsar Court today, where they will seek his custody.

What did Laljit Bhullar say?

"Waheguru Ji. I have always taken every step in my life with the Almighty by my side, fully conscious that He is watching over everything. For me, my people are my God; I have always seen a glimpse of the Divine in their faces. Every decision I have made in my life has been solely for their welfare and to walk the path of truth. However, the rumors currently circulating—suggesting that I have become a fugitive—are untrue. I have never run away from the truth. I have complete faith in the laws of the land and unwavering confidence in the justice system. I have not fled anywhere; I remain right here in Punjab. Placing my trust in truth and justice, I am voluntarily surrendering myself at Mandi Gobindgarh."

What is the issue?

The FIR, the suicide video, and the allegations leveled by the family members have rendered this case highly sensitive. The matter has now even reached the floor of Parliament, where demands are being raised for a CBI inquiry into the case. The Bhagwant Mann-led government has categorically stated that there will be absolutely no bias or favoritism shown in this matter, and that the law will take its own course.

Gagandeep Singh Randhawa served as the District Manager for the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) in Amritsar. An FIR regarding his suicide has been registered at the Ranjit Avenue Police Station, based on a complaint filed by his wife, Upinder Kaur. In this complaint, allegations have been leveled against former Minister Laljit Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh, and his personal assistant, accusing them of subjecting the deceased to continuous harassment, mental pressure, and intimidation.

It is alleged that on the morning of March 21, 2026, Gagandeep Randhawa consumed a poisonous substance known as 'Sulfas.' Subsequently, his health deteriorated rapidly. He was admitted to a hospital, where he subsequently passed away. Before his death, he recorded a 12-second video clip that has since gone viral. In this video, he directly held Laljit Bhullar responsible for his plight.

Gagandeep Singh Randhawa had stated that he was going to commit suicide out of fear of the minister. Initially, his family members refused to perform the last rites, demanding that action be taken first. Subsequently, an FIR was registered late at night. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges such as abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation, and breach of trust.
